Try this on for size: Sales tax on bikes returns, fossil fuels exempt

Plenty of unhappy comments today in response to this column about the B.C. Government - via tax harmonization - removing longstanding tax exemptions for, among many other things, bicycles.

BC residents will also pay higher taxes on:

. hard hats, safety boots, smoke detectors and items used in farm production, everything from fence posts to hog pens;
. restaurant meals, knitting yarn, and pollution control products;
. alternative fuel vehicles, jet aircraft, and a range of goods used by the aquaculture industry;
. energy-efficient products and other “green” goods.

Exemptions will be in place for only these items:

. Children’s clothing, car seats, diapers, books, feminine hygiene products, gasoline and diesel fuel.

  1. Great, so now people will be less likely to be safe because it will cost them more. What says "incentive" more than taxes on alternative fuel vehicles and energy-efficient/green products? And to add insult to injury, for those of us who would like to see more cars off the road, they are not going to tax fuel for these cars/trucks that pollute; and then there's the taxing of the pollution control products. Good job Barry Penner (Min. of Environment). I'll be sure to tell my friends who have asthma to send you the bills for their inhalers, cuz apparently, there's gonna be more pollution in the air, cuz CLEAN air is taxable.

    It's hard to believe that our prov. gov't is still so ignorant; and we're, supposedly, the prov. that's so into being healthy. It really is all a sham. Just propaganda to get them elected. I'm so tired of Gordo. I wish someone would just put him in his place, and that's not in the Legislature in Victoria.

    I wish someone would invest in a really good plyers to help Gordo pull his head out of his ass.
